Singer-songwriter Maktub is experiencing what he calls a “miracle.” His heartfelt ballad “Child of the Beginning”, released back in January 1, has made a surprise resurgence in the charts — and much of the credit goes to YouTuber Park Da-hye.
The track, rich in poetic and philosophical lyrics, recently topped YouTube Korea’s weekly trending songs and soared to top positions on Genie (#6) and Melon (#11). Despite heavyweight comebacks by SEVENTEEN, IU, and RIIZE, Maktub’s ballad found its way back into listeners’ hearts through a deeply emotional cover by Park Da-hye.
Park’s two cover videos of the song have amassed over 7 million views, breathing new life into the track. Maktub praised her as a “destined collaborator,” saying her voice added new depth and emotion to the song’s story.
The lyrics of “Child of the Beginning” blend themes of time, love, and existential reflection, with lines like “The sparkle of the gaze we shared / I’ll call that moment the star of the beginning”. The song’s emotional climax, when Maktub sings “I reach you,” has resonated with listeners as a symbol of pure, unwavering affection.
Interestingly, the Japanese phrase on the album cover — “始まりの子” (Hajimari no Ko) — also includes the word “Ai”, meaning love. This clever double entendre reinforces the song’s layers of emotional sincerity.
Behind the scenes, Maktub revealed the song took 9 months of intensive writing and editing. He obsessed over each line, sometimes pausing for days to perfect a single phrase.
Viral moments also helped: a YouTube Shorts clip showing him singing in the rain — sleeveless and powerful — racked up over 2.6 million views, leading fans to joke that his vocal power comes from his muscles.
With a decade-long career and hits like “To You, My Shining Star” and “Marry Me”, Maktub is carving out a unique space in the Korean music scene, balancing deep lyricism with mass appeal.
